About Aberystwyth and the Area

Aberystwyth is a lively, cosmopolitan seaside town. Nestled in the middle of Cardigan Bay and backed by the Cambrian Mountains. It serves the entire population of Mid Wales and has amenities and attractions to suit. The local population of the town itself is bolstered by the student population of the University and by holiday-makers in the summer giving Aberystwyth a lively, cheerful feel all of its own.

Employment

There are plenty of employment opportunities in Aberystwyth. The largest employers in the area are, Aberystwyth University, Bronglais Hospital, The Welsh Assembly - thanks the the new Welsh Assembly buildings in the town and IGER. There are also plenty of other large employers such as Rachael's Dairy. The student and tourism sectors provide plenty of employment opportunities too, as do the many national retailers we have in the town. There is also a range of smaller independent employers within Aberystwyth and the surrounding areas.

Lifestyle

Aberystwyth Cafe

Aberystwyth has a strong local identity with plenty to do for everyone. From a day to day perspective it has a range of national retailers and supermarkets and plenty of well respected local merchants too. Getting around town is easy and nothing is too far away. It has a lively night life thanks to the student population but plenty of 'quieter' pubs, restaurants and cafes too. In fact it has quite a vibrant cafe scene for its size and restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and budgets.

The Arts

The Aberystwyth Arts Centre on the University Campus has a wide-ranging artisitc programme. It houses a cinema screening films to suit all taste. They also live-screen National Theatre and Opera productions, have a number of art galleries and a programme of classes and events including, drama, dance, the visual arts, classical music and much more for the whole community.

Aberystwyth also has a cinema in town showing a wide range of the latest films. The National Library which overlooks the town also hosts various galleries and exhibitions as well as being the premier copyright library in Wales.

Sports and Pursuits

If the outdoors is your thing, then Aberystwyth is definitely the place for you. With the sea to the west and beaches galore there is no end of things to do on the water. Surfing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, kayaking, fishing and most other water-based pursuits are well catered for. If you'd prefer to be out in the hills then the Cambrian Mountains and Snowdonia are on your doorstep. Walking, climbing, birdwatching, mountain biking or just enjoying the great outdoors are never far away.

Aberystwyth also has a range of sports facilities. The University sports centre has a pool, gym, astro turf court and an endless array of classes such as spin classes and circuits, all of which are open to the public as well as students. Plascrug Leisure Centre in town has similar facilities and offerings. There are also other gyms and classes to be had in town and very well attended running clubs, cycling clubs, triathlon clubs and other sports clubs too. There is a bowling green and tennis courts in town as well as an 18 hole golf course.

Aberystwyth Town Football Club and Aberystwyth Rugby Club play regular fixtures at their grounds and smaller league clubs play locally as well.

Attractions

There are plenty of other local attractions such as steam railways, Nant yr Arian, Devils Bridge Falls, the Cliff Railway and Constitution Hill plus too many other things to mention here.

Aberystwyth's Victorian seafront provides the perfect place to relax after a hard day, be that at work or play. Many residents will be found strolling along the seafront on a summers evening, watching the starlings come to roost under the Pier and the sun setting over Cardigan Bay. If you are lucky you may sea dolphins at play in the bay, and you are bound to bump into someone you know. Aberystwyth really is the perfect place to live, but beware, many people who come here find themselves putting down roots and never wanting to leave.
